Pierre Gasly’s race undone by overheating brakes

Slika
Canadian Grand Prix – Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly had his afternoon compromised by constantly having to manage his brake temperatures. The French driver took a reasonable P5 during qualifying for Sunday’s race, albeit having been beaten to P4 by Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo. Having led Red Bull’s Q3 charge after Max Verstappen got caught out in Q2 by the timing of Kevin Magnussen’s crash, Gasly’s hopes were high that he could finish in front of the Dutch driver for the first time this season. However, the race didn’t pan out particularly well for him, as he came home P8. Starting on the Softs, he attempted to undercut Ricciardo by coming in on Lap 7 but, with the Hard tyre not coming up to temperature straight away, stayed behind the Renault after the stop. Nico Hulkenberg also managed to get in front when he emerged from his stop nine laps later. Stuck behind the two Renaults, Gasly was then forced into half a race of conservation as he struggled with his brake temperature...

Kvyat – ‘I really didn’t want to finish P11’

Slika
Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat secured his fourth points finish of the season and third in a row at the Canadian Grand Prix after finishing tenth behind Lance Stroll. Kvyat had been outside the top ten for the majority of the race but managed to chase down and get past Carlos Sainz’s McLaren towards the end of the race to secure a point for himself and the team. “It was a cool race! I really didn’t want to finish P11,”  Kvyat said on Honda’s report. “It would have sucked if we didn’t get any points today. It was a good fight with Carlos at the end, I like having battles with him on track as it’s always on the limit, and it was nice to get the overtake done.” Happy with the result and performance of the car the Russian turned his focus on working towards the next race in France. “I think we got pretty much everything we could out of the car today, so I’m very happy with how the race went,”  he added. “Now we’ll continue to work hard t...

HÜLKENBERG: RENAULT CAN LEAVE CANADA WITH A SMILE ON THEIR FACES

Slika
Nico Hülkenberg  says the  Renault F1 Team  are leaving the  Circuit Gilles Villeneuve  with a smile thanks to a double points finish from the Enstone based team. Both Hülkenberg and  Daniel Ricciardo  qualified in the top ten, with the Australian managing to clinch fourth place in qualifying. Both Renault cars maintained the pace and finished in the points, with Ricciardo clinching sixth whilst his German team-mate finishing in seventh place. Hülkenberg enjoyed a clean race passing  Mercedes AMG Motorsport ‘s  Valtteri Bottas  at the start and making his soft tyres go the distance, which helped the German in passing  Red Bull Racing ‘s  Pierre Gasly  in the pit stop. The German managed to hold back Gasly throughout the race whilst Ricciardo engaged in a lengthy fight with Bottas, which the Finnish driver would eventually win. The German maintained his seventh place throughout the race, and even had a sniff at bat...

F1: Vettel penalty boosts Hamilton

Slika
The Canadian Grand Prix ended in controversy and a pending Ferrari appeal after Sebastian Vettel crossed the finish line first, but the race was awarded to Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. Vettel was given a five-second penalty by stewards after an incident on lap 48 when he buckled to pressure by Hamilton and ran onto a grass chicane, forcing the Mercedes driver to take evasive action. It was deemed a dangerous re-entry and as stewards handed down the penalty Vettel stayed in front defending the lead. “I had nowhere to go. Seriously, I had nowhere to go,” fumed Vettel over team radio when told of the penalty. “They are stealing the race from us. “No, no, no, no, no, no … Seriously, you need to be an absolute blind man to let him pass and not control your car – where am I supposed to go? This is a wrong world, this is not fair.” Vettel made his point again after the race, switching the No.1 winners sign from Hamilton’s car to his own vacant spot.

Ricciardo’s Renault is getting better

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo had his best result with Renault, a sixth place that prompted team principal Cyril Abiteboul to note their “recovery plan” was working after a poor start. “The rest of the team executed everything impeccably giving us confidence back while also not forgetting errors made at the beginning of the season,” Abiteboul said in a team statement. “We remain very concentrated and conscious of the work there is left to do. “We’re moving forward to the French Grand Prix from tonight, as it marks the second stage of our recovery plan after the first one on the engine side.” Ricciardo was also happy, despite not being able to hold onto the fourth place that he’d won in qualifying. “I did all I could out there and I’m happy with the end result. It’s the team’s first double points of the year and it’s a big one in sixth and seventh, and we can’t ask for anything more than that,” he said. “There are definitely positive signs this weekend. We know the top teams ar...
